Acts|17:1|-|And they traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to |1a|Thessalonica, where there was a |2b|synagogue of the Jews.
Acts|17:2|-|And according to his |a|custom Paul |1|went in to them, and on three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the |b|Scriptures,
Acts|17:3|-|Opening and setting before them that the Christ had to |a|suffer and |b|rise from the dead, and saying, This is the |c|Christ, the Jesus whom I announce to you.
Acts|17:4|-|And |a|some of them were persuaded and |1|were joined to Paul and |b|Silas, as well as a great multitude of the |c|devout |d|Greeks, and of the chief |e|women not a few.
Acts|17:5|-|But the Jews, becoming |a|jealous and taking along some evil men from among the loafers in the marketplace, gathered a crowd and |b|set the city in an uproar; and coming upon the house of |c|Jason, they sought to bring them to the populace.
Acts|17:6|-|But when they did not find them, they |a|dragged Jason and some brothers before the city officials, shouting, These men who have |b|upset the |1|world have come here also,
Acts|17:7|-|Whom Jason has welcomed; and these all act contrary to the decrees of |a|Caesar, saying that there is another |b|king, Jesus.
Acts|17:8|-|And they stirred up the crowd and the city officials, who listened to these things.
Acts|17:9|-|And when they had taken bail from Jason and the rest, they released them.
Acts|17:10|-|And the |a|brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away during the night to Berea, who, when they arrived, went off into the |b|synagogue of the Jews.
Acts|17:11|-|Now these people were more |1|noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness, |a|examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
Acts|17:12|-|Therefore many of them believed, and there were not a few Greek |a|women of high standing and men.
Acts|17:13|-|But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been announced by Paul in Berea also, they came there as well, |a|agitating and stirring up the crowds.
Acts|17:14|-|And immediately the |a|brothers then sent Paul off, to |b|go as far as the sea; and Silas and |c|Timothy remained there.
Acts|17:15|-|And those who conducted Paul brought him as far as |1a|Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and |b|Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they went off.
Acts|17:16|-|And while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, |a|his |1|spirit was provoked within him as he beheld that the city was |2b|full of idols.
Acts|17:17|-|He reasoned therefore in the |a|synagogue with the Jews and the |b|devout, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.
Acts|17:18|-|And some of the |1|Epicurean and |2|Stoic philosophers also confronted him. And some said, What would this |3|babbler wish to say? And others, He seems to be an announcer of foreign |4|deities—because he was |a|announcing Jesus and the |b|resurrection as the gospel.
Acts|17:19|-|And they took hold of him and led him to the |1a|Areopagus, saying, May we know what this |b|new teaching is which is being spoken by you?
Acts|17:20|-|For you are bringing |a|strange things to our ears. We intend to know therefore |1|what these things mean.
Acts|17:21|-|(Now all the Athenians and the foreigners sojourning there spent their time on nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)
Acts|17:22|-|And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, |1|Men of Athens, I observe that in every way you |2|very much revere your deities.
Acts|17:23|-|For while I was passing through and carefully observing the objects of your |a|worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore you worship |b|without knowing, this I announce to you.
Acts|17:24|-|The |1|God who |a|made the world and all things in it, this One, being |b|Lord of heaven and earth, does |c|not dwell in temples made with hands;
Acts|17:25|-|Neither is He served by human hands as though He needed anything in addition, since He Himself gives to all life and |a|breath and all things.
Acts|17:26|-|And He made from |1|one |a|every nation of men to dwell on all the |b|face of the earth, determining beforehand their |2|appointed seasons and the |c|boundaries of their dwelling,
Acts|17:27|-|That they might |a|seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, even though He is |1b|not far from each one of us;
Acts|17:28|-|For |1|in Him we live and move and are, as even some |2|poets among you have said, For we are also |3|His |4|race.
Acts|17:29|-|Being then the race of God, we ought not to suppose that |1|what is divine is like |a|gold or silver or stone, like an engraving of art and |2|thought of man.
Acts|17:30|-|Therefore, having overlooked the |a|times of |b|ignorance, God now |1|charges all men everywhere to |c|repent,
Acts|17:31|-|Because He has set a |1a|day in which He is to |b|judge the world in righteousness by the man whom He has designated, having furnished |2|proof to all by |c|raising Him from the dead.
Acts|17:32|-|And when they heard of a |a|resurrection of the dead, some |b|scoffed; and others said, We will hear you yet |c|again concerning this.
Acts|17:33|-|Thus Paul went out from their midst.
Acts|17:34|-|But some men |a|joined him and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the |b|Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.
