Acts|22:1|-||1|Men, |a|brothers and fathers, hear my |2b|defense which I now make to you.
Acts|22:2|-|And when they heard that he addressed them in the Hebrew |1|dialect, they became more quiet. And he said,
Acts|22:3|-|I am |1|a |a|Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia but brought up in this city and trained at the feet of |b|Gamaliel, according to the |c|strictness of the law of our fathers, being |d|zealous |e|for God, even as you all are today.
Acts|22:4|-|And I |a|persecuted this |1|Way unto death, binding and delivering to |b|prisons both men and women,
Acts|22:5|-|As also the |a|high priest and all the |1|assembly of the elders testify for me; from whom I also received |b|letters to the brothers and went to |c|Damascus to bring those also who were there bound to Jerusalem that they might be punished.
Acts|22:6|-|And as I journeyed and |a|drew near to Damascus about midday, suddenly a great light flashed out of heaven around me;
Acts|22:7|-|And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting |1|Me?
Acts|22:8|-|And I answered, Who are You, |1|Lord? And He said to me, I am Jesus the |a|Nazarene, whom you persecute.
Acts|22:9|-|And those who were with me beheld the light, but did not |1|hear the voice of the One who was speaking to me.
Acts|22:10|-|And I said, |a|What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Rise up and go into Damascus, and there it |1|will be told to you concerning all the things which have been appointed to you to do.
Acts|22:11|-|And as I could |1|not see because of the glory of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me and came into Damascus.
Acts|22:12|-|And a certain |1a|Ananias, a devout man according to the law, |b|well attested to by all the Jews dwelling there,
Acts|22:13|-|Came to me, and standing by, said to me, Saul, brother, |1a|receive your sight! And in that very hour I looked up at him.
Acts|22:14|-|And he said, The |a|God of our fathers has previously |b|appointed you to know His |c|will and to see the |d|righteous One and to hear the voice from His mouth;
Acts|22:15|-|For you will be a |a|witness to Him unto all men of the things which you have |b|seen and heard.
Acts|22:16|-|And now, why do you delay? Rise up and |1|be |a|baptized and wash away your sins, |2b|calling on |3|His |c|name.
Acts|22:17|-|And when I returned to |a|Jerusalem and was praying in the |b|temple, I went into a |1|trance;
Acts|22:18|-|And I saw Him saying to me, Hurry, and go quickly out of Jerusalem, because they will not accept your |a|testimony concerning Me.
Acts|22:19|-|And I said, Lord, they know that I was |a|imprisoning and beating from |b|synagogue to synagogue those who believe on You;
Acts|22:20|-|And when the |a|blood of Your |b|witness Stephen was being |c|shed, I myself also was standing by and |d|approving and keeping the garments of those who did away with him.
Acts|22:21|-|And He said to me, Go, for I will send you forth |a|far away to the |b|Gentiles.
(4) |Bound by the Romans22:22-29
Acts|22:22|-|And they listened to him up to this word, and then they lifted up their voice, saying, |a|Away from the earth with such a man, for it is |b|not fitting for him to live!
Acts|22:23|-|And as they were crying out and casting off their garments and throwing dust in the air,
Acts|22:24|-|The |1|commander ordered him to be brought into the |a|barracks, saying that he should be |b|examined by scourging in order that he might |c|ascertain for what cause they were shouting against him so.
Acts|22:25|-|But as they stretched him out |1|with the thongs, Paul |2|said to the centurion standing by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a |a|Roman and uncondemned?
Acts|22:26|-|And when the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported, saying, What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.
Acts|22:27|-|And the commander came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? And he said, Yes.
Acts|22:28|-|And the commander answered, With a large sum of money I acquired this citizenship. And Paul said, But I was even born a Roman.
Acts|22:29|-|Immediately therefore those who were about to |a|examine him withdrew from him; and the |b|commander also was |c|afraid, realizing that he was a |d|Roman and that he had |e|bound him.
(5) |Defending himself before the Sanhedrin22:30-23:10
Acts|22:30|-|And on the next day he, intending to find out for certain why he was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and all the |1a|Sanhedrin to come together; and having brought Paul down, he had him stand before them.
