b. |The negative scene5:1-11
Acts|5:1|-|But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a piece of property
Acts|5:2|-|And put aside for himself some of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it. And he brought some part of it and laid it at the |a|feet of the apostles.
Acts|5:3|-|But Peter said, Ananias, why has |a|Satan filled your heart to deceive the |1|Holy |b|Spirit and to put aside for yourself some of the proceeds of the land?
Acts|5:4|-|While it remained, |1|was it not your own? And when it was sold, |1|was it not under your authority? Why is it that you have |2|contrived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to |3|God.
Acts|5:5|-|And when Ananias heard these words, he |a|fell down and |1|expired; and great |b|fear came upon all those who heard this.
Acts|5:6|-|And the young men arose and wrapped him up; and carrying him out, they buried him.
Acts|5:7|-|And it happened that after an interval of about three hours, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.
Acts|5:8|-|And Peter answered her, Tell me whether you have sold the land for this much? And she said, Yes, for this much.
Acts|5:9|-|And Peter said to her, Why is it that it was |1|agreed between you two to |a|test the |b|Spirit of the |2|Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.
Acts|5:10|-|And she |a|fell down instantly at his feet and expired. And the young men came in and found her dead; and carrying her out, they buried her with her husband.
Acts|5:11|-|And great |a|fear came upon the whole |1b|church and upon all those who heard these things.
7. |The signs and wonders done through the apostles5:12-16
Acts|5:12|-|And through the hands of the apostles many |1|signs and wonders took place among the people; and they were all with one |a|accord in the |b|portico of Solomon.
Acts|5:13|-|And none of the rest dared to join themselves to them, but the |a|people magnified them.
Acts|5:14|-|And believers were all the more being added |a|to the Lord, |b|multitudes of both men and women,
Acts|5:15|-|So that they even carried the sick out into the |a|streets and placed them on cots and mats, in order that when Peter came, at least his shadow might |b|overshadow some of them.
Acts|5:16|-|And the multitude from the cities surrounding Jerusalem also came together, carrying the |a|sick and those troubled by unclean spirits, for such ones were all being healed.
8. |The continuation of the persecution by the Jewish religionists5:17-42
a. |The Sanhedrin's arrest of the apostles and the Lord's rescue — vv.|17-28
Acts|5:17|-|And the high priest and all those with him, the local |a|sect of the |b|Sadducees, rose up and were filled with |c|jealousy;
Acts|5:18|-|And they |a|laid their hands on the apostles and put them in public custody.
Acts|5:19|-|But during the night an |a|angel of the Lord |b|opened the doors of the prison, and leading them out, said,
Acts|5:20|-|Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the |1a|words of |2|this life.
Acts|5:21|-|And when they heard this, they entered about daybreak into the temple and began to teach. And the |a|high priest and those with him came up and called together the |b|Sanhedrin, |1|even all the council of elders of the sons of Israel, and sent men to the prison for them to be brought.
Acts|5:22|-|But when the officers arrived, they did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported,
Acts|5:23|-|Saying, The prison we found locked with all security, and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened the doors, we found no one inside.
Acts|5:24|-|Now when they heard these words, both the |1a|captain of the temple and the chief priests were utterly perplexed concerning them as to what this would come to.
Acts|5:25|-|And someone came up and reported to them, Behold, the men whom you put in the prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.
Acts|5:26|-|Then the captain with the officers went away and brought them without violence, for they feared the |a|people, lest they would be |b|stoned.
Acts|5:27|-|And having brought them, they stood them in the |a|Sanhedrin. And the high priest questioned them,
Acts|5:28|-|Saying, We |1|strictly charged you |a|not to teach based upon this name; and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man’s |b|blood upon us.
b. |The apostles' testimony — vv.|29-32
Acts|5:29|-|But Peter and the apostles answered and said, It is necessary to obey God |a|rather than men.
Acts|5:30|-|The |1|God of our |a|fathers has |b|raised Jesus, whom you slew by hanging Him on a |c|tree.
Acts|5:31|-|This One God has |1a|exalted to His |b|right hand as |2|Leader and |c|Savior, to |3|give |4d|repentance to Israel and |e|forgiveness of sins.
Acts|5:32|-|And we are |a|witnesses of these |1|things, and so is the Holy |2b|Spirit, whom God has given to those who |3|obey Him.
c. |The Sanhedrin's prohibition and release — vv.|33-40
Acts|5:33|-|But when they |a|heard this, they were |1|exasperated and intended to do away with them.
Acts|5:34|-|But a certain |1|Pharisee in the |a|Sanhedrin named |b|Gamaliel, a |c|teacher of the law honored by all the people, stood up and commanded that they put the men outside for a little while.
Acts|5:35|-|And he said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves, with regard to these men, in what you are about to do.
Acts|5:36|-|For before these days Theudas rose up, saying that he was somebody, with whom a number of men, about four hundred, took sides. And he was done away with, and all who were persuaded by him were dispersed and came to nothing.
Acts|5:37|-|After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the |a|enrollment and drew away a group of people after him. And that man perished, and all who were persuaded by him were scattered.
Acts|5:38|-|And now I say to you, withdraw from these men and leave them alone; for should this |a|counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown;
Acts|5:39|-|But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them, lest you be found to be even |a|fighters against God.
Acts|5:40|-|And they were persuaded by him. And having called the apostles to them, they |a|beat them and charged them |b|not to speak based upon the name of Jesus; and they released them.
d. |The apostles' rejoicing and faithfulness — vv.|41-42
Acts|5:41|-|So they went from the presence of the |a|Sanhedrin, |b|rejoicing that they were counted worthy |1|to be dishonored on behalf of the |c|Name.
Acts|5:42|-|And every day, in the |1|temple and from |2|house to house, they did not cease teaching and |a|announcing the gospel of |3|Jesus as the |b|Christ.
