Luke|20:1|-|And on one of the days, as |1|He was |a|teaching the people in the |b|temple and announcing the good news, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders |c|came upon Him,
Luke|20:2|-|And spoke, saying to Him, Tell us by what |a|authority You do these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?
Luke|20:3|-|And He answered and said to them, I also will ask you one thing, and you tell Me:
Luke|20:4|-|The |a|baptism of John, was it from |b|heaven or from men?
Luke|20:5|-|And they reasoned together among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, He will say, Why did you |a|not believe him?
Luke|20:6|-|But if we say, From men, all the people will stone us to death, for they are persuaded that John was a |a|prophet.
Luke|20:7|-|And they answered that they did not know where it was from.
Luke|20:8|-|And Jesus said to them, |1|Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
Luke|20:9|-||1|And He began to speak to the people this |a|parable: A certain man |b|planted a |c|vineyard and leased it out to |d|vinedressers and went |e|abroad for a considerable time.
Luke|20:10|-|And at the proper time he |a|sent a slave to the vinedressers so that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the vinedressers |b|beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
Luke|20:11|-|And he went on to send another slave, but they beat that one also, and dishonored him, and sent him away empty-handed.
Luke|20:12|-|And he went on to send a third, but that one also they wounded and threw out.
Luke|20:13|-|And the master of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son, the |a|beloved; they will |1|probably respect this one.
Luke|20:14|-|But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, This is the |a|heir; let us kill him that the inheritance may become ours.
Luke|20:15|-|And they threw him |a|out of the vineyard and |b|killed him. What then will the master of the vineyard do to them?
Luke|20:16|-|He will come and |a|destroy these vinedressers and will give the vineyard to |b|others. And when they heard this, they said, May it never happen!
Luke|20:17|-|But He looked at them, and said, What then is this that is written, |a|“The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner”?
Luke|20:18|-|Everyone who falls on that |a|stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it shall crush him to powder and scatter him like |b|chaff.
Luke|20:19|-|And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on Him in that hour; yet they feared the people, for they perceived that it was with them in view that He spoke this parable.
Luke|20:20|-||1|And they |a|watched Him closely and |b|sent spies who |c|feigned themselves to be righteous, in order that they might lay hold on some |d|word of His, so as to |e|deliver Him up to the rule and authority of the |f|governor.
Luke|20:21|-|And they questioned Him, saying, Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, |1|and do not accept man’s |a|person, but teach the |b|way of God in truth.
Luke|20:22|-|Is it lawful for us to pay |a|taxes to |b|Caesar, or not?
Luke|20:23|-|But He perceived their |a|craftiness and said to them,
Luke|20:24|-|Show Me a |a|denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have? And they said, Caesar’s.
Luke|20:25|-|And He said to them, Therefore |a|render the things that are Caesar’s to Caesar, and the things that are God’s to God.
Luke|20:26|-|And they were not able to lay hold of a |a|saying of His in the presence of the people; and marveling at His answer, they kept silent.
Luke|20:27|-||1|And some of the |a|Sadducees, who say there is no |b|resurrection, came to Him and |c|questioned Him,
Luke|20:28|-|Saying, Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If anyone’s brother has a |a|wife and dies, and this one is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.
Luke|20:29|-|There were then seven brothers. And the first took a wife and died childless;
Luke|20:30|-|And the second|1|;
Luke|20:31|-|And the third took her; and similarly the seven also did not leave children and died.
Luke|20:32|-|Finally the woman also died.
Luke|20:33|-|In the resurrection, therefore, which one’s wife does the woman become? For the seven had her as wife.
Luke|20:34|-|And Jesus said to them, The |a|sons of this age |b|marry and are given in marriage,
Luke|20:35|-|But those who are counted |a|worthy to obtain that |1|age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage;
Luke|20:36|-|For neither can they |a|die anymore, for they are equal to |b|angels, and they are |c|sons of God, being sons of the |d|resurrection.
Luke|20:37|-|But that the dead are raised, even Moses disclosed in the section concerning the |a|bush, when he calls the Lord the God of |b|Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
Luke|20:38|-|Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all men are |a|living.
Luke|20:39|-|And some of the scribes answered and said, Teacher, You have spoken |a|well.
Luke|20:40|-|For they |1a|no longer dared to question Him about anything.
Luke|20:41|-||1|And He |a|said to them, How is it that they say that the Christ is |b|David’s son?
Luke|20:42|-|For David himself says in the book of Psalms, |a|“The Lord said to my Lord, |b|Sit at My right hand,
Luke|20:43|-|Until I set Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”
Luke|20:44|-|David therefore calls Him Lord, and how is He |a|his |1|son?
Luke|20:45|-|And as all the people were listening, He |a|said to His disciples,
Luke|20:46|-||1|Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love |a|greetings in the |b|marketplaces and chief seats in the synagogues and |c|places of honor at the dinners,
Luke|20:47|-|Who devour widows’ houses, and for a |1|pretense make long prayers. These shall receive |a|greater |2|judgment.
