d. |A warm welcome to the meek King21:1-11
Matt.|21:1|-||a|And when they |1|drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of |b|Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
Matt.|21:2|-|Saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will |1|find a donkey tied and a colt with her; untie them and lead them to Me.
Matt.|21:3|-|And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The |1|Lord has need of them; |2|and immediately he will send them.
Matt.|21:4|-||a|Now this took place in order that what was spoken through the prophet might be |b|fulfilled, saying,
Matt.|21:5|-||a|“Say to the |1|daughter of Zion, Behold, your King is coming to you, |b|meek and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, a |2|foal of a beast of burden.”
Matt.|21:6|-|And the disciples went and did as Jesus directed them,
Matt.|21:7|-|And led the donkey and the colt. And they put their |1|garments on them, and He sat upon them.
Matt.|21:8|-|And most of the crowd spread their own |a|garments in the road, and others cut |1b|branches from the trees and spread them in the road.
Matt.|21:9|-|And the crowds who went before Him and those who followed cried out, saying, |1|Hosanna to the |2a|Son of David! |b|Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the |c|highest!
Matt.|21:10|-|And when He |a|entered into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this?
Matt.|21:11|-|And the crowds said, This is the |a|prophet Jesus from |b|Nazareth of Galilee.
4. |In Jerusalem21:12-23:39
a. |Cleansing the temple21:12-16
Matt.|21:12|-||a|And Jesus entered into the temple and cast out all those who were selling and buying in the temple. And He overturned the tables of the |b|money changers and the seats of those who were selling the |c|doves,
Matt.|21:13|-|And He said to them, It is written, |a|“My house shall be called a house of prayer,” but you are making it a |b|den of robbers.
Matt.|21:14|-|And the |a|blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.
Matt.|21:15|-|But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that He did and the children who were crying out in the temple and saying, |a|Hosanna to the Son of David, they were |1|indignant.
Matt.|21:16|-|And they said to Him, Do you hear what these are saying? And Jesus said to them, Yes. Have you |a|never read, |b|“Out of the mouth of |c|infants and sucklings You have perfected praise”?
b. |Lodging in Bethany21:17
Matt.|21:17|-|And leaving them, He went |a|out of the city to |1b|Bethany and lodged there.
c. |Cursing the nation of Israel21:18-22
Matt.|21:18|-||a|Now in the morning as He returned to the city, He became |1b|hungry.
Matt.|21:19|-|And seeing a |1a|fig tree on the way, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only. And He said to it, May there |2|no longer be fruit from you forever! And the fig tree was instantly |3|dried up.
Matt.|21:20|-|And when the disciples saw this, they marveled, saying, How did the fig tree instantly dry up?
Matt.|21:21|-|And Jesus answered and said to them, Truly I say to you, If you have |a|faith and do not |b|doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this |c|mountain, Be taken up and cast into the sea, it will happen.
Matt.|21:22|-|And all that you |a|ask in prayer, if you believe, you will receive.
d. |Tested21:23-22:46(1) |By the chief priests and elders concerning His authority21:23-22:14
Matt.|21:23|-||a|And when He came into the temple, the chief priests and elders of the people came to Him as He was |b|teaching and said, By what authority do You do these things? And |c|who gave You this authority?
Matt.|21:24|-|And Jesus answered and said to them, I also will ask you one |1|thing, which if you tell Me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Matt.|21:25|-|The baptism of John, from where did it come, from |a|heaven or from men? And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, He will say to us, Why then did you not believe him?
Matt.|21:26|-|But if we say, From men, we fear the crowd, for all hold John as a |a|prophet.
Matt.|21:27|-|And they answered Jesus and said, We do |1|not know. He too said to them, |2|Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
(a) |The shifting of the birthright21:28-32
Matt.|21:28|-|But what do you think? A man had two children. And he came to his first son and said, Child, go today and work in the |a|vineyard.
Matt.|21:29|-|And he answered and said, I do not want to; yet later he regretted and went.
Matt.|21:30|-|And he came to the other and said likewise. And he answered and said, I will, sir; yet he did not go.
Matt.|21:31|-|Which of the two did the will of the father? They said, The |1|first. Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you that the |a|tax collectors and the |b|harlots are going into the kingdom of |c|God before you.
Matt.|21:32|-|For John came to you in the |a|way of |1|righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him. And you, when you saw it, did not later regret it to believe him.
(b) |The transfer of the kingdom of God21:33-46
Matt.|21:33|-||a|Hear another parable. There was a man, a |1|householder, who planted a |1b|vineyard and put a |c|hedge around it, and dug a |d|winepress in it, and built a tower; and he leased it out to |1|vinedressers and went |e|abroad.
Matt.|21:34|-|And when the time to harvest the fruit drew near, he |a|sent his |1|slaves to the vinedressers to get his fruit.
Matt.|21:35|-|And the vinedressers took his slaves and |1a|beat one, and |b|killed another, and |c|stoned another.
Matt.|21:36|-|Again, he sent some other slaves, more than the first, and they did likewise to them.
Matt.|21:37|-|Then later he sent to them his |1a|son, saying, They will respect my son.
Matt.|21:38|-|But the vinedressers, when they saw the son, said among themselves, |1|This is the |a|heir. Come, let us |b|kill him and take possession of his inheritance.
Matt.|21:39|-|And they |a|took him and cast him |1b|out of the vineyard and |c|killed him.
Matt.|21:40|-|Therefore when the master of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?
Matt.|21:41|-|They said to Him, He will miserably |1a|destroy those evil men and will lease the vineyard to |2|other vinedressers, who will give the |b|fruit to him in their seasons.
Matt.|21:42|-|Jesus said to them, Have you |a|never read in the Scriptures, |b|“The |1|stone which the |1|builders rejected, this has become the |2c|head of the corner. This was from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes”?
Matt.|21:43|-|Therefore I say to you that the |1|kingdom of |a|God shall be taken from you and shall be given to a |2|nation producing its |b|fruit.
Matt.|21:44|-|And |1|he who falls on this |a|stone shall be broken to pieces; but on |2|whomever it falls, it shall |b|crush him to powder and scatter him like chaff.
Matt.|21:45|-|And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking concerning them.
Matt.|21:46|-|And though they sought to |a|seize Him, they feared the crowds because they held Him as a |b|prophet.
