e. |Rebuking the religionists23:1-36(1) |Their hypocrisy — vv.|1-12
Matt.|23:1|-||a|Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,
Matt.|23:2|-|Saying, The |1a|scribes and the |2b|Pharisees have seated themselves in |c|Moses’ seat;
Matt.|23:3|-|Therefore all that they tell you, |a|do and keep; but do not do according to their |b|works, for they say things and do not do them.
Matt.|23:4|-|And they bind burdens, |a|heavy and hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.
Matt.|23:5|-|And all their works they do to be |a|seen by men, for they broaden their |1b|phylacteries and enlarge the |2c|fringes of their garments,
Matt.|23:6|-|And they love the |a|place of honor at the dinners and the chief seats in the synagogues
Matt.|23:7|-|And the |a|salutations in the marketplaces and to be called by men, |1b|Rabbi.
Matt.|23:8|-|But you, do not be called Rabbi, for |1|One is your |a|Teacher, and you are all |b|brothers.
Matt.|23:9|-|And do not call anyone on earth your father, for |1|One is your |a|Father, |2|He who is in the heavens.
Matt.|23:10|-|Neither be called |1|instructors, because |2|One is your Instructor, the Christ.
Matt.|23:11|-|And the |a|greatest among you shall be your servant.
Matt.|23:12|-|And he who will |a|exalt himself shall be humbled, and he who will |b|humble himself shall be exalted.
(2) |Their eightfold woe — vv.|13-36
Matt.|23:13|-|But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, |1|hypocrites! For you |a|close off the kingdom of the heavens in the face of men; for you do |2b|not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to enter.
Matt.|23:14|-||1|But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you |a|devour the widows’ houses, even while for a pretense you make long prayers. For this reason you shall receive greater |2|judgment.
Matt.|23:15|-|Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you go about the sea and the dry land to make one |a|proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a |b|son of |1c|Gehenna as yourselves.
Matt.|23:16|-|Woe to you, |a|blind |b|guides, who say, Whoever |c|swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, |1|he is bound.
Matt.|23:17|-|Fools and blind men, which is greater, the gold or the temple which |1a|sanctifies the gold?
Matt.|23:18|-|And, Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the |a|gift which is upon it, he is bound.
Matt.|23:19|-|Blind men, which is greater, the gift or the altar which |1a|sanctifies the gift?
Matt.|23:20|-|Therefore he who swears by the altar swears by it and by all the things upon it;
Matt.|23:21|-|And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by Him who |a|dwells in it;
Matt.|23:22|-|And he who swears by |a|heaven swears by the |b|throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.
Matt.|23:23|-|Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For |a|you |b|give a tenth of the mint and the anise and the cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law—|1c|justice and |d|mercy and faithfulness. But these you should have done and |2|not neglected the others.
Matt.|23:24|-||a|Blind guides, who strain out the gnat but swallow the camel!
Matt.|23:25|-|Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For |a|you |b|cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but inwardly they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.
Matt.|23:26|-|Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and the dish so that their outside also may become clean.
Matt.|23:27|-|Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you resemble |a|whitewashed |b|graves, which outwardly appear beautiful but inwardly are full of dead men’s |c|bones and all |d|uncleanness.
Matt.|23:28|-|So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matt.|23:29|-|Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you |a|build up the graves of the prophets and adorn the tombs of the righteous,
Matt.|23:30|-|And say, If we had been there in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Matt.|23:31|-|So then you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who |a|murdered the prophets.
Matt.|23:32|-|And you, |a|fill up the measure of your fathers!
Matt.|23:33|-|Serpents! Brood of |a|vipers! How shall you escape the judgment of |b|Gehenna?
Matt.|23:34|-||a|Therefore, behold, I |b|send to you |1c|prophets and wise men and |d|scribes. Some of them you will |e|kill and crucify, and some of them you will |f|scourge in your synagogues and |g|persecute from |h|city to city,
Matt.|23:35|-|So that upon you may come all the righteous |a|blood shed on the earth, from the |b|blood of righteous Abel to the blood of |c|Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
Matt.|23:36|-|Truly I say to you, |1|All these things shall come upon this |a|generation.
f. |Forsaking Jerusalem with its temple23:37-39
Matt.|23:37|-||a|Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and |b|stones those who are sent to her! How often |1|I desired to gather your |c|children together, the way a hen gathers her brood under her |d|wings, and you would not!
Matt.|23:38|-|Behold, your |1|house is left to you |2a|desolate.
Matt.|23:39|-|For I say to you, You shall by no means see Me from now on until you say, |a|Blessed is He who |1|comes in the name of the Lord.
